Ernest was born in Korumburra, and the family lived at their farm at Kardella. He was the son of the local Stonemason. The family later moved to Melbourne, and "Ern" became a Body and Coach Builder. He married Sylvia Laural Kingsford, who was a tailoress, and had her own business. The later had a bike Shop in Preston and the Mentone Timberyard, before moving to Gippsland. Their son Keith was killed in a motorbike accident in Melbourne. They moved to Bairnsdale for a time, and it was here that their youngest child, Ivan contracted infantile paralysis. Sylvia, with determination and persistence, spent years getting their son mobile again, after doctors advised that he would never walk again.
Erns
was a skillful man, and he was known throughout Gippsland for his bakers
carts. His ability also ensured they had a caravan, which he built
himself, and they made seven trips around Australia. |
