Andrew Anderson and Ann emigrated to Australia aboard the "Clifton". Arriving in Melbourne on 12th February 1850. They were one of the imigrant families picked by John Dunmore Lang to better the quality of people settling in Australia. Andrew was a Piano maker, supposedly the first in Victoria. He also was a builder of The Harmonium and Organs. His talents went to composing music as well. He set up business in Geelong, where he was a respected craftsman. He later moved and set up a business in Bond Street, South Yarra, to have a wider field for his work. Warmly attached to Church music he published a volume called "Sacred Harmony", in four vocal parts with an Organ accompianment. He published a coarse of Progressive Piano Lessons and subsequently a comparison volumne of"Anthems, dexologies and Chants" with the hope of raising the congregational standard of musical tastes. He was of a very congenial character and warm hearted, and whilst in Melbourne won many friends. He died at the early age of 58 after being in robust health, he suffered a stroke and died. It was said at his funeral "His sun has gone down, while it is yet day". He was survived by his wife and seven children. He is buried in the St. Kilda cemetery, Melbourne. |
